Understanding Sensory Integration
Why It Matters for Learning, Behavior and Comfort

What is Sensory Integration?

Sensory Integration refers to the brain's ability to take in sensory information and organization the data to help navigate the world. Sensory-Integration also refers to one's ability to know and understand their body in relation to their environment. Proprioception, which controls body-awareness, and vestibular input, which controls balance and movement, are also components of Sensory Integration.

Why Does Sensory Integration Matter?

The ability to feel grounded in your body is dictated by your sensory integration, as is essential for classroom-related tasks and ultimately the ability to engage with learning.  Behaviors such as sitting at a desk, staying focused, and maintaining attentive posture all require strong sensory-integration.

What Are Some Signs of Sensory-Integration Weakness?

Symptoms of Sensory-Integration Weaknesses may come in various forms: postural, physiological state, and/or behavioral trends. Commonly observed symptoms are learning, slumping, fidgeting or seeking movement, shaking legs, being tired easily, quick to irritation.
